The board approved $200 to be used to repair and restore tombstones in the McKinney section of the Van Alstyne Cemetery. Should the project require more money, the board will vote on additional funds to be used for this purpose. The board and members also voted that the committee map the McKinney section and create a list of every stone that needs repairs, as well as take a photo of the stone. This list will then be made available to the public. Each stone in need of repair will be offered up for “adoption.” Patrons may adopt a grave for $20…the money will be used to repair the stone. This summer the committee will begin mapping and documenting the graves in need of repair. A display will be made available at Fall Der All to allow individuals an opportunity to adopt gravesites. Also beginning this summer, the committee will use the $200 to begin making repairs. If you would like to help with this project, please let me know! We will meet at the cemetery soon to begin photographing and making a list to have it ready in time for fall der all. The list and adoption process will also be available in an online format for people to adopt stones.
